A cryptocurrency is a currency that only exists digitally and that uses encryption software to determine and track ownership (known as “blockchain” technology). Bitcoin is the best known cryptocurrency. Unlike regular currencies (like US dollars or euros), cryptocurrencies are “decentralized” – all of the information about them is spread out publically (encrypted) over the internet worldwide and they’re not region-specific or backed by any singular authority, like a central bank.
